Celebrate Earth Month More Sustainably

April is Earth Month, and you can do a lot of things to celebrate the planet that we can all call home. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics, where we focus on not only reducing plastic consumption but also eliminating it as much as possible. Here are some tips for you to celebrate while dining:

In the Dining Commons:

  • Reduce food waste: You can always ask the DC staff to customize your plate. Try-A-Taste let’s you sample a bit of the food before fully committing to it and if you do not like one portion of the dish, Just Ask! And it can be made to your liking.
  • Start simple with a few plates and if you are still hungry, you can always go back for more!

When eating out:

  • Opt-in for reusables: Carry your own reusable utensil set, napkins and water bottle when going out so that you avoid needing to use single-use items.
  • Reduce food waste: Take any leftovers home to enjoy the next day.
  • Plant-Forward eating: Get creative with your meals and try dishes that highlight plant-based products. Look for such items at the Dining Commons or when eating out.
  • Shop food sustainably: Support your local producers by shopping for locally grown items at the grocery store or by visiting your local farmer’s market. The UC Davis farmer's market runs every Wednesday from 10:00-1:30 pm in front of the Student Community Center!

You can also celebrate by:

  • Reducing waste: Check our Waste Guide if you are ever unsure where to dispose your waste.
  • Planting a tree or a plant: Plants and trees capture carbon, cool overheated places, benefit agriculture and provide support for your local pollinators. Visit one of our Resident Gardens if you are ready to start!
  • Conserve water: Take efficient showers, turn off the water when not directly in use and report leaks to Student Housing or your property manager.
  • Save energy: Use natural light during the day, open the windows for fresh air and unplug cords and electronics not being used.
  • Taking care of the environment around you: Take care of the plants and animals, reduce your waste, respect green spaces, think about your food and get involved with the community.
  • Spend time outdoors: Take a walk around the arboretum, visit the Resident Gardens, go for a hike around the area or simply ride your bike around Davis!
