Winter Break Information

For Residence Halls Only

Before you leave for winter break here's what you need to know.  This information was also emailed to your UC Davis email account.

Before you leave:
  • The residence halls close on Saturday, December 16 at noon. You must vacate by this time. You will not have access to your room over the winter break.
  • The residence halls open on Friday, January 5 at 8am.
  •  Refrigerator: Remove food items, clean, unplug and leave door open with bowl or towel underneath to defrost and prevent mold from developing.
  •  Remove all trash from your room and suite; please visit this webpage for more information:
  • Check and/or empty your mailbox inside your area’s Service Center
  • Unplug ALL electrical appliances.
  • Turn off lights and turn down thermostats to the lowest setting.
  • LOCK windows and OPEN drapes/blinds.
  • LOCK your room/suite door.
  • Take valuables home.
  • Don’t forget your passport, ID, wallet/purse or prescription medications.

Packages: The residence halls will be closed & mailrooms unstaffed December 16 through January 4. If you are ordering packages, please ensure that it is being mailed to wherever you will be staying over the winter break. Any mail/packages addressed to the residence halls will be refused and returned to sender. Thank you!

  • UC Davis police will patrol all of the Student Housing areas during the winter break.
  • For fire, safety, and security reasons, Student Housing staff will also conduct facilities checks to make sure the buildings and areas are secure during the closure. They will also need to access buildings/rooms to perform preventative maintenance tasks or respond to a maintenance emergency.

Due to the potential for fire hazard, live trees are not allowed in the residence halls. Artificial trees are allowed but must display evidence of certification of flame-retardant treatment. Please remove the artificial trees from your room before you leave for break.


Please remove all holiday decorations from your door and windows before you leave for break.


It is not advisable to leave bikes in bike parking areas during winter break. We suggest that you take your bike home or leave it in your room. Bikes should not be locked up in hallways or other public spaces during the break.


The last meal served will be dinner on Friday, December 15. Meals resume with dinner on Friday, January 5.

Important Dates:


  • 14 Latitude closes after dinner
  • 15 Last mail and package delivery
    • Dinner will be served at all Dining Commons and will close at 8pm
    • Markets close at 6pm
  • 16 Residence halls close at NOON – Residents may not stay in the halls
  • over Winter Break! Door access will be shut off to all buildings at noon.


  • 5 Residence halls and Area Service Desks open at 8am
    • Segundo Dining Commons open at 5pm: meals resume with dinner
    • Winter Quarter instruction begins
  • 8 Cuarto and Tercero Dining Commons open at 7am: meals resume with breakfast
    • Latitude opens and area Markets opens at 9am

If you have questions, please visit your Area Service Desk. 

Please lock your door every time you leave your room.  Do not leave your valuables where they can easily seen or stolen.
