Peer Mentors & Post-Break Tips

Welcome back from Winter Break! We hope you had a restful break and are ready to make the most of your Winter Quarter! Here are some tips and resources to help you succeed academically and professionally.

Tips for Coming Back from Break

  • The start of a new quarter is the perfect time to reset and set yourself up for success. Here are some tips to get you started:
  • Reflect on your achievements last quarter and set new, achievable goals for this term.
  • Use a planner or digital tools like Google Calendar to map out deadlines, assignments, and extracurriculars.
  • Join student organizations or attend campus events to meet new people and expand your network.
  • Prioritize your mental and physical health by maintaining a balanced schedule and using resources like the Student Health and Counseling Services.

Thinking about Research and Job Opportunities? 

  • This is a great time to start looking and getting involved! UC Davis offers resources to help you gain professional experience:
    Career Center
  • This center offers career advising, resume and cover letter resources, and other events and workshops to help you to look for jobs or internships.
  • Undergraduate Research Center (URC)
  • The URC facilitates research opportunities for UC Davis undergraduates in all majors. They offer advising, information sessions, sponsored programs, fellowships and awards. 
  • Handshake 
  • An online platform for job and internship opportunities. Browse postings and connect with potential employers.
  • Global Learning Hub
  • Explore internships, research, and study abroad programs that align with your academic and professional goals.

Academic Peer Mentors: Your Go-To Resource

  • Peer Mentors are here to offer support to all first year students, including transfers and commuters, in their transition to college. 
  • What can they help you with?
  • Preparing for class registration and academic advising appointments
  • Accessing and navigating campus resources
  • Learning how to effectively study and balance your schedule
  • Getting involved with student organizations and clubs
  • Finding opportunities in research, jobs, internships, etc.
  • Using online tools like OASIS, Schedule Builder, Canvas, and MyDegree
