Energy and Water Challenge - Week 3: Waste
Learn about waste and get points in the challenge.
Waste -of all kinds- is one of the main contributors to GHG emissions. All waste going into the landfill usually takes decades, if not centuries, to break down while polluting the air and ground (National Institutes of Health, 2022). To change this, here are some useful tips to follow:
- Reduce the amount of waste you produce: You can opt for reusable items, DIY many things you need at home, and find creative ways to upcycle things that would otherwise go to waste. Find some upcycling ideas here.
- By reducing waste, you are cutting down waste emissions at their source.
- Sort your waste properly: Modern landfills are designed to store waste long-term, not recycle or compost it. Proper waste sorting allows items to be recycled or composted, which produce fewer emissions than landfilling or incineration.
- Check out your building Waste Guide to get familiar with waste sorting in your building.
