Waste Studies and Other Sustainability Tips
This Week at the Dining Commons
This week, SHDS Sustainability will be hosting the Spring Quarter Waste Studies, where we will be measuring how much post-consumer food waste is produced in the DCs. If you see us, we encourage you all to stop by and share feedback regarding your meals.
Arbor Day!
On April 29 each year, Day of Trees is celebrated. This day is dedicated to planting trees and recognizing their importance. The tradition takes on many forms and names around the country, but is most commonly known as Arbor Day. Day of Trees is commemorated as a way to combat and spread awareness about deforestation (cutting down of trees) and its negative effects, as well as celebrate all the benefits we get from trees.
You can celebrate on April 29 or any day of the year! Below are some activities/resources you can access!
- Check out the student farm and volunteer to help prune or help take care of trees.
- Volunteer with Tree Davis to help plant trees. https://www.treedavis.org/volunteer/
- Take a stroll through the Davis Arboretum and learn about the trees around Davis.

Grow with us at the Resident Gardens
Spring brings warmer temperatures and less precipitation, which means that our plants need to be watered more frequently. Have you ever thought about what needs to be done to water plants efficiently while taking into account high temperatures and evaporation, different water needs, and the time that it takes? This is your chance to come and learn about efficient watering methods and how you can apply that into your gardening journey.
Join us this week at the Resident Garden and learn about watering techniques using a hands-on approach!
