Sustainability on Campus

SHDS Sustainability will be focusing on "Sustainability on Campus" during the winter quarter, where we will bring you information about our campus sustainability partners and how you can connect with other sustainability resources in UC Davis.

Stay tuned for our tabling topics and events, where you will get to know more of them!

Sustainable New Year's Goals

As we dive headfirst into the new year, make sure your list of goals and resolutions also includes actions that can benefit our planet. Whether it’s swapping out those plastic bags for some trendy reusable ones or starting seeds, there are endless ways to create a positive impact on our planet. Here are some tips:

  • Use less water: Starting your journey towards a more sustainable year can be as easy as reducing your water consumption. Shorter showers, full loads of laundry, and reducing the flow of the tap are a great start!
  • Reduce waste: This can take place anywhere from quitting plastic straws and sorting waste properly, to upcycling old stuff, donating things you do not use anymore, and ditching single-use plastics.
  • Plant or grow something new: Plants are an amazing addition to our list of resolutions for this year. You can check any of our Resident Gardens if you are ready to take action.

Save energy during the cold season

We are officially in winter, so save energy with the tips below:

  • Keep windows closed to keep the heat in your room while avoiding extra pressure on your room heater.
  • Layer up with cozy clothes while indoors.
  • Use natural light by opening your blinds.
  • Avoid taking long showers. We know that hot showers are great during cold months, but challenge yourself to a two-song shower!

Welcome back to the Resident Gardens

Join us this quarter for new garden adventures, where we will be growing many plants from scratch, keeping our gardens safe against cold temperatures, and learning many gardening tips.

There are two Resident Gardens on campus, one at Segundo (between Bixby Hall and the Segundo Dining Commons) and one at Tercero (between Latitude and Currant Hall).

The gardens are open to residents living in Student Housing and offer the opportunity to get involved in caring for a garden and growing plants and crops. Either through our Garden Hours or by adopting your own plot through Adopt-A-Plot.

Garden Hours for Winter Quarter coming soon, please keep an eye on the Sustainability Newsletter for the most updated information.
