What is Plant-Forward eating?

The Dining Commons will be having a theme meal this Thursday, January 25 during dinner time, where they will showcase dishes that highlight and celebrate plant-based products. But have you heard what a Plant-Forward dining eating is?

According to Menus of Change, a Plant-Forward eating is a style of cooking and eating that emphasizes and celebrates but is not limited to plant-based foods -including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, soy foods, nuts, and seeds. This style provides a nutrient-rich foundation for overall well-being and healthy nutrition while also reflecting evidence-based principles of health and sustainability. Putting plant-based meals first not only reduces the carbon footprint of our meals, but also opens a new range of possibilities when it comes to cooking, putting plant-based products as the star of the dish. Some of the things you can do to start exploring this style is to incorporate things slow, like swapping go-to snacks for plant-forward replacements, explore plant-based meat substitutes or thinking about animal protein as a side dish, rather than the main ingredient.

Trying one of the meals during the Theme Meal at the DCs can be a great opportunity to try this eating style, and open new possibilities for a more sustainable dining experience.
